Those of you that know me know the beach is my first love. It always has been and always will be. I have been to beaches on both coasts east, west, north and south, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and yes Alaska. The beach takes my soul and nourishes it. It calms me and energizes me at the same time.
All that being said, Sonoma & Napa areas are my second favorite place to go. The weather is great, the food is delicious, and the wines are far and wide. Any kind you want, any price you want. Some of the scenery reminded me of Tuscany. It’s just beautiful with rolling hills, the grapes, olive trees and more.
The last trip that we went to the wine country, I was able to find a great deal at a “5” star resort and spa. Even though I’m an agent, I have to shop for deals just like everyone else. You can fly into Sacramento or San Francisco. We like Sacramento because it’s less congested to get in and out of.
Everyday we visited at least one winery. We have our favorite where we spent the afternoon on their porch having a picnic lunch with a great bottle of Cabernet. We did a guided tour of four wineries. That is a good way to see multiple places and not have to drive. They simply pick you up at the hotel and drop you off. We also did a walking foodie tour in downtown Sonoma. On Tuesdays, Sonoma has a fun Farmer’s Market where you can bring a bottle of wine and sit in their park. We tasted several vendors and enjoyed local music. Their produce is to die for but we didn’t have a kitchen.
We always like to spend one or two days just enjoying the resort where we are staying. It gives you some down time and you get to enjoy the activities they have to offer. This particular one had free wine tasting every afternoon. We also enjoyed their spa area and had a couples massage. It was wonderful. We had a day pass for the spa and used it in the bathing areas which are different pools, saunas, and steam rooms.
We also did the drive to Big Sur. It is a winding road but the views are spectacular. The cliffs and the roaring Pacific Ocean reminded me of Hawaii. Well worth the drive. Plan on a full day for this. We decided to spend a couple days there so we stayed in Monterey. The second day we visited Carmel. They are numerous shops and restaurants in that area.
